  Passage1.

Another cultural aspect of nonverbal communication is one that you might not think about:space.

Every person perceives himself to have a sort of invisible shield surrounding his physical body. When someone comes too close,he feels uncomfortable. When he bumps onto someone,he feels obligated to apologize. But the size of a person's"comfort zone"depends on his cultural ethnic origin. For example,in casual conversation, many Americans stand about for feet apart. In other words, they like to keep each other"at arm's length".People in Latin or Arab cultures,in contrast, stand very close to each other, and touch each other often. If someone from one of those cultures stands too close to an American while in conversation, the American may feel uncomfortable and back away.

When American are talking, they expect others to respond to what they are saying. To Americans, polite conversationalists empathize by displaying expressions of excitement or disgust, shock or sadness.

People with a"Poker face”,whose emotions are hidden by a deadpan expression, are looked upon with suspicion.Americans also indicate their attentiveness in a conversation by raising their eyebrows, nodding, smiling politely and maintaining good eye contact.Whereas some cultures view direct eye contact as impolite or threatening,Americans see it as a sign of genuineness and honesty. If a person doesn't look you in the eye,American might say,you should question his motives---or assume that he doesn't like you.Yet with all the concern for eye contact,Americans still consider staring---especially at strangers-to be rude.

26.What did the author probably talk about immediately prior to this passage?

  A.verbal communication

B.the reasons why people should think about space

C.the relationship between communication and space

27.The distance people keep to each other while talking is closely related with their_______

  A.origin

  B.custom

  C.culture

  D.nationality

28.When an Italian talks to an Arabian on casual occasions,_______.

A.he stands about four feet away

  B.“comfort zone”does not exist

  C.communication barriers may emerge

  D.keeping close enough is preferred

  29.A"poker face?"(Line 3,Para 2)refers to a face which is_______.

  A.expressionless

  B.suspicious

  C.attentive

  D.emotional

30.In a friends'conversation,Americans see it as sincere and truthful to_______.

A.hide emotions with a deadpan expression

  B.maintain direct eye contact

C.display excitement or disgust, shock or sadness

  Passage 2

After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994,earthquake scientists had good news to report:The damage and death toll(死亡人数)could have been much worse.More than 60 people died in this earthquake.By comparison,an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.

Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m.on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city's highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city's buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.

Despite the good news, civil engineers aren't resting on their successes.Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place.

In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend without breaking.Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations(振动).The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports.Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake's vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction.

The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.

31.One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low is that___________________.

A.new computers had been built into the buildings

B.it occurred in the residential(居住的)areas rather than on the highways

C.large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holiday

D.improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways

B.predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracy

C.help strengthen the foundation of the building

D.measure the impact of an earthquake's vibrations

33.The smart buildings discussed in the passage ________.

  A.would cause serious financial problems

  B.would be worthwhile though costly

C.would increase the complexity of architectural design

D.can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes

34.It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attention

  should be focused on ________.

A.the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital construction

B.the development of flexible building materials

C.the reduction of the impact of ground vibrations

  D.early forecasts of earthquakes

B.encourage civil engineers to make more extensive use of computers

C.outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materials

D.report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildings

  Passage 3

Everybody lies.It may only be"white lies",but everyone tells lies or"omits the truth"sometimes.People start lying at around age 4 to 5 when children gain an awareness of the use and power of language. This first lying is not ill-natured,but rather to find out,or test, what can be controlled in a child's environment.Eventually children begin to use lying to get out of trouble or get something they want.White lies, those told to protect someone's feelings, are not a big deal at all.The person, however, who seems to feel forced to lie about both small and large stuff, has a problem. They lie to protect themselves, look good, gain financially or socially and avoid punishment.A much more troubling group is those who lie a lot,and knowingly, for personal gain.Lying often gets worse with the passage of time. When you get away with a lie,it often forces you to continue your lies.

Why do we dislike liars so much? It's a matter of trust. When people lie, they have broken a bond–an unspoken agreement to treat others as we would like to be treated.Serious lying often makes it impossible for us to trust another person again.Because the issue(问题)of trust is at risk, coming clean about the lie as soon as possible is the best way to mend fences. If the truth only comes out once it is forced, repair of trust is far less likely. As a parent, the most important message you can send to your children about lying is that you always–always–want them to come clean with you.No matter how small a lie they have told, remind them that you would always rather hear the truth,no matter how bad it is,than be cheated.Tell them there is really nothing better in your relationship than your trust of each other.

36.According to the passage, the worst liars are those who ________.

  A.tell white lies

  B.feel forced to tell lies

C.lie a lot for personal gain

D.began to lie at a very young age

  37.What's the writer's opinion about telling"white lies"?

A.They do not matter too much.

B.They are necessary in our life.

C.They do not cause any problems.

D.They are as bad as any other lies.

38.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.With time passing by,we will forget the lies people tell.

B.When a person lies,he will feel uneasy and stop lying soon.

C.Once a person tells a big lie,we will not trust him any more.

D.If lies are not found out, probably the liar will continue to lie.

39.Why do we dislike liars so much?

A.Because they do not trust others.

B.Because they lie for personal gains.

C.Because they betray our trust in them.

D.Because they lie to avoid punishment.

40.What should you do as a parent when you find your children have lied?

A.Tell them to learn to trust other people.

B.Tell them to explain immediately why they have lied.

C.Ask them to forget about the past and not to lie any more.

D.Make them realize they should always tell the truth.

  Passage 4

It seems that ever since fashion models in Japan started revealing their love for their dogs in magazines and on television, the meaning of"man's best friend"has taken a new turn.Dogs have almost become a must for young people trying to lead a trendy life. One women's magazine even wrote in a recent issue featuring dog accessories(饰物):The cute combination of a collar and a silver necklace is something we must imitate!

Dog lovers have long considered their dogs as equals, but recent trends show that,at times, dogs are more equal than humans.Raincoats and sweaters for dogs, pet hotels, and colorful collars are nothing new.But the notable feature among dogs in Japan is the brand fashion. There are Burberry's dog skirts and scarves and Kate Spade's dog carriers, and Gucci's flying plates for dogs have proven so popular that they are now out of stock.

We have more in common with our best friends than just luxury goods, though. Many people take their dogs'mental and physical well-being seriously, and manufacturers have been ready to meet this new demand. There are also soaps and shampoos for dogs.Classes offered by community centers that teach owners how to cook and knit(编织)for their dogs also have been gaining attention recently.

Toy manufacturers will market a device that recognizes, analyzes, and categorizes dog's voice according to"levels of emotion."Consisting of a tiny microphone that hangs around the neck of the animal and a display that can be monitored, the device allows owners to identify how their dog is feeling from a selection of six different emotions.

Attitudes toward dogs have definitely changed in the past decade or so.Biscuits and cakes from the bakery are all made from vegetable-based ingredients, and are free of salt, sugar, and chemical substances. To help meet the needs of people,an increasing number of cafes and restaurants have been allowing dogs to walk into their places.People used to think that dogs should be kept outside, but today many look at them as part of their families,or even partners.

41.Why does the author say that the meaning of"man's best friend"has taken a new turn?

A.Dogs are becoming more expensive today.

B.Dogs are no longer man's best friend as before.

C.Man has lost their best friend in the trendy life.

D.Dogs can now lead people's fashion in modern life.

D.Young people love dogs more than human.

  B.Dogs'mental and physical well-being.

C.A toy device that can tell dogs'emotions.

D.Biscuits and cakes exclusively for dogs.

44.What does the last paragraph want to tell us?

  A.Dog food has become healthier.

B.People consider dog as part of their family.

C.People's attitudes towards dogs have changed.

D.Restaurants welcome dogs to boost their business.

45.What is the main idea of the reading?

A.Dogs are becoming more popular in modern life.

  Dear Mr.David Smith,

Thank you very much for ordering 100 cases of shirts from our company. We will make every possible effort to speed up delivery.

In terms of transportation packaging,we suggest using cartons instead of wooden cases, for the cartons are comparatively lighter and cheaper, and thus easy to handle.Recently,we have used cartons in trade with another American company and it turns out to be great.

I would appreciate it if you take my suggestion into consideration and I am looking forward to your reply.

  Yours sincerely,

  Wang Hai
